Clyde Edwards-Helaire is going to be Patrick Mahomes’ best friend
Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Patrick Mahomes are going to get along just fine on the football field this season.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Patrick Mahomes are going to be an interesting pair to watch for the Kansas City Chiefs.
In April’s NFL Draft, Kansas City took Edwards-Helaire at No. 32 overall. The youngster had his best season with the LSU Tigers last year, notching 1,414 rushing yards on 6.6 YPC with 16 touchdowns. He also caught 55 passes for 453 yards and one touchdown.
In 2019, Edwards-Helaire had seven 100-yard rushing games including 110 yards against Clemson in the National Championship Game. The 5-foot-7, 207-pounder is a real threat when he catches passes out of the backfield as well. He’ll be able to create mismatches with linebackers in the passing game in that part of the field or if he’s split out as a wide receiver.
According to ESPN’s Adam Teicher, Willie Davis, the Chiefs scout for Louisiana and the surrounding area said that he has the ability to make people miss and if a defender gets him in open space one-on-one, Edwards-Helaire is going to win that battle because of his footwork and vision.
As complex as the Chiefs’ offense is, general manager Brett Veach believes Edwards-Helaire will thrive in the system. LSU took advantage of his route-running and versatility, which is something Kansas City values tremendously, as evidenced by receivers Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman.
While Mahomes will always look downfield with Hill, Hardman, Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins and Demarcus Robinson, Edwards-Helaire provides both an improved running game and the ability to dump the ball off for chunk yardage.
