What numbers would be a successful season for Nick Foles?

The Bears are hoping that Nick Foles can replicate his Super Bowl production. 

After going on an absolute tear during the 2018 NFL playoffs that ended with a Super Bowl victory, quarterback Nick Foles looked like he was one of the best and most explosive quarterbacks in the league.

In those three playoff games Foles started in during the Philadelphia Eagles’ run to the title, he threw for over 200 yards in each, including 352 yards against the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship game and 373 yards against the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. Foles was playing like a totally different quarterback compared to when he struggled in his previous stint with the Eagles or during his one season with the Rams.

He was able to have moderate success the next year, but only played in five games during that 2018 regular season with the Eagles’ original starting quarterback, Carson Wentz, returning from an injury he suffered the previous season.

Later in that regular season, Wentz again suffered an injury that forced him to miss the playoffs where Foles again showed off his magic. In a Wild Card matchup against the Bears, Foles threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns, one of which was on fourth-and-goal with less than a minute left in the game.

Nick Foles may not replicate his past form, but will succeed if he plays better than Mitch Trubisky.

Foles then lost to the Saints in the Divisional round, and went onto sign a contract with the Jaguars during the offseason. He was surprisingly unremarkable during his time in Jacksonville, where only played in five games and threw three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Now, Foles joins the Chicago Bears with a chance to reassert himself as a high-level NFL quarterback. And with current starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky not being very impressive, Foles will certainly have his opportunity.

Last season, Trubisky threw for 3,138 yards, which was less than his previous season. His completion percentage also dropped from 66.6 percent in 2018 to 63. 2 percent in 2019, and his touchdown passes decreased from 24 to 17.

It’s difficult to truly compare Foles to Trubisky since Foles has very rarely played a full NFL season, and Foles’ best full season ended with him throwing for 2,891 yards and 27 touchdown in 2014 with Philly.

Those numbers are not significantly better than anything Trubisky has put up, but Trubisky has shown none of the explosiveness or high-level ability that Foles has flashed.

Ultimately, if Foles ends up being the starting man in Chicago and plays a full season, any number over 3,000 passing yards — along with 20 or more touchdown passes and a completion percentage around 65 percent — should constitute a successful season given how Trubisky played in 2019 and how Foles has played in complete seasons in the past.
