NFL training camp is in flux once again

For a professional sports league who had a multi-month head start, the NFL sure is entering full-on panic mode to ensure the 2020 season commence during the coronavirus pandemic. The league and the NFL Players Association have already agreed upon the testing protocol and the cancellation of preseason games, two huge hurdles threatening to bring a pause to training camp. But there’s one more roadblock that could curtail the upcoming season.

According to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, training camps could potentially be shut down if the NFL and NFLPA can’t reach an agreement on economics by this Sunday. The hard deadline occurs on that date because that’s when the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs begin their training programs.

No money, no camp

For those thinking that teams can resort to virtual meetings and workouts like they did during organized team activities, that’s no longer the case. Instead, owners could completely shut down operations and send players back home.

This would be quite the nightmare scenario for the league. In fact, players are currently flying from all over the country to undergo their first COVID-19 tests at their respective team facilities. Doing all of that just to send them home would be a complete doomsday scenario.

Team owners and players disagreeing over the payment structure in public is nothing new for sports fans. Months ago, the MLB and MLBPA vented their frustrations through social media over financial details for the 2020 season.

If the NFL goes down this path, a lot of fans are going to be ticked off, especially those who are displaced from their jobs due to the pandemic. Either way, NFL training camp is in serious danger of not occurring on time if there’s no agreement on Sunday. Keep your eyes peeled for the news, good or bad.
