Seattle NHL will be known as the Kraken and who doesn’t love that?
There are great ideas and then there’s Seattle NHL adopting the Kraken as their nickname.
Sure, there were other options, but this one was the best. Who doesn’t fear a fictitious sea monster beast? The Kraken’s mythology plays very well here and one that newfound hockey fans in the Pacific Northwest. If the Vancouver Canucks never floated your boat, maybe the Seattle Kraken will, or better yet, will capsize your boat into becoming a full-blown NHL fan.
Seattle getting the 32nd NHL team signifies plenty of great things for the major Pacific Northwest metropolis. It gives Seattle a fourth major men’s professional sports team after the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, the MLB’s Seattle Mariners and the reigning MLS Cup champion Seattle Sounders. All we’re missing is the NBA to bring back the beloved Seattle SuperSonics. It’s only a matter of time.
Are you ready for the Seattle Kraken to dominate the NHL going forward?
Things got off to a bumpy start with the logo accidentally leaking at the start of the presentation. You can also see that the NHL Seattle Twitter account has been updated to include the team’s nickname, color scheme and primary logo. Their primary colors are dark blue, seafoam green and bright red. The Kraken pull it off well and we can’t wait to what the uniforms look like here soon.
The logo and nickname are something Seattle can be proud of. It encompasses the city’s maritime culture, as well as the curious nature of what’s really out there at sea? Sure, there were other nicknames that could have stuck. They could have been the Seattle Mets like the NHL team they had a century ago. They could have been the Seattle Sockeyes. Thankfully, it’s the Seattle Kraken.
The expansion franchise will begin play in the 2021-22 NHL season. They will be playing at Climate Pledge Arena, which is being constructed as we speak. The ownership group, Seattle Hockey Partners, consist of billionaire David Bonderman, film producer Jerry Bruckheimer and sports executive Tod Leiweke. Hockey Hall of Famer Ron Francis is the team’s general manager.
The Kraken will obviously compete in the NHL’s Pacific Division, as the Arizona Coyotes will move to the Central Division at the start of the 2021-22 NHL season. This will now give all four divisions in the league eight teams residing within them. By adding two expansion franchises way out west in Seattle and the Vegas Golden Knights before that, the NHL has even greater reach than before.
While you can buy Kraken gear here soon, it’ll be a while before they get on the ice in fall 2021.
