The Chargers are one of the weirdest teams in the league. Some might even call them directionless. On one hand, the signing of Chris Harris, adding to an already loaded defense featuring the likes of Joey Bosa and Derwin James, suggests the Chargers want to make a run at the postseason.

On the other hand, the selection of Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert No. 6 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft and the implication that bridge quarterback Tyrod Taylor will start suggests they are looking towards the future.

If the Chargers want to wipe the slate clean and fire Anthony Lynn should they struggle to get above .500 again, the Chargers could hire Riley. Doing so would give Herbert, who is very much on the raw side despite being immensely talented, a sagely figure to learn offensive football from.

The defense needed to contend is already in place, as the secondary is top-notch. If Riley arrives and turns Herbert into a star, LA might end up becoming the biggest threat to the Kansas City Chiefs in that division over the next decade,
