The chairman of the Boston Red Sox sure does seem salty after the Mookie Betts contract extension.

We’ve heard the confidence from Boston Red Sox fans that the team would be able to sign star outfielder Mookie Betts this winter, despite trading him to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The cockiness quickly faded this week after Betts signed a 12-year, $365 million contract extension with the Dodgers. While those fanatics quieted down, one high-ranking official in the Red Sox organization let everyone know that he’s absolutely salty at that news.

During a radio appearance on WEEI on Friday, Red Sox chairman Tom Werner told Dodgers fans not to celebrate so soon and pointed out the NL West team’s lack of success in the past couple of decades.

“When people are partying in Los Angeles, I just want to remind Los Angeles … that in the last 20 years, Los Angeles has won zero World Series and the Red Sox have won four,” Werner said during his appearnce on WEEI’s “Ordway, Merloni, and Fauria.” “So I’ve got nothing to be complaining about regarding our past, and we think we made the right decision at the time.”

High levels of salt up in Boston

Yes, Werner is taking on the role of the spurned, bitter ex. Come on Tom, no one likes a buzzkill. Just admit you’re mad!

Werner did stress during his interview that the Red Sox did offer Betts a $300 million contract extension, but talks fell apart. That was when general manager Chaim Bloom opted to flip the outfielder and starting pitcher David Price to Hollywood in a three-team trade including the Minnesota Twins.

If you thought Werner was done, he warned that the 12-year deal could come back to haunt the Dodgers, just like other decade-long contracts in MLB history.

You can’t blame Werner for towing the company line to try and cheer up the Red Sox fan base that, quite honestly, have little expectations this season. But when you have a player like Betts on your team, you do whatever it takes to retain him. It’s that simple.

Don’t blame the Dodgers for doing what you couldn’t, Tom!
