Bashaud Breeland is ready for his financial payout

As if the Kansas City Chiefs haven’t doled out enough contract extensions this offseason, another one of their standout defensive players wants what’s his. Bashaud Breeland, one of the more underrated defensive backs in the NFL, wants to take (what he believes) is his rightful place among the highest-paid corners in football.

The Chiefs lack the necessary cap room to hold Breeland true to his word, as the 27-year-old has yet to make a Pro Bowl in his six-year NFL career, and was even arrested this offseason on alcohol and driving-related charges.

So, as much as Breeland may believe he’s due a new contract, Kansas City and Brett Veach aren’t inclined to pay him as one of the top corners in the game until he proves it on the gridiron.

Can the Chiefs afford to pay Bashaud Breeland what he’s worth?

Breeland is due to make $4.5 million in 2020, and after they committed to pay Chris Jones $80 million over the next four seasons paired with Patrick Mahomes mega-deal (12 years, $500 million), KC doesn’t have much to play with.

Despite his off-field issues, Breeland took to Twitter to proclaim his innocence shortly thereafter.

“Lot of people wanna speculate on my situation and don’t know the facts. I really was at a gas pump got approach by two guys, police pulled up they throw something (in) my car as police pulled up which the cop saw and I was the one detained wit charges that really shouldn’t be charged. I’m not fighting to clear a name I don’t care wat people think, I know the truth, innocent until proven guilty,” Breeland said.

Whether that’s enough to convince the Chiefs to ink him long-term remains to be seen, but his 48 combined tackles, eight passes defensed and two interceptions make him rather vital to KC’s secondary, paired with the likes of Tyrann Mathieu.
