When should you have your fantasy football draft in 2020?
By John Buhler
When is the right time to have your fantasy football draft in 2020?
Usually, we end up using the third NFL preseason game as the benchmark for when it’s a good time to start drafting in fantasy football. The reason for this is starters actually play a good bit in the third preseason game. Since the fourth preseason game is all about filling out the 53-man roster, you can feel confident about having a draft, knowing no one you’ll take will get hurt.
But how do you go about it when there are no preseason games? Fortunately, The Fantasy Footballers have your back. They know exactly what to do to go about scheduling a draft ahead of what should be the strangest NFL season out of lifetimes, as we are still in the midst of the age of the coronavirus.

Frankly, you’re going to want to wait as long as possible before having your draft. The 2020 NFL season is set to kickoff on Thursday, Sept. 10, as the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will host the Houston Texans in primetime. That might be the latest date possible for you to hold your fantasy draft. NFL Week 1 action will be out in full force on Sunday, Sept. 13.
How late should you wait to have your 2020 fantasy football draft?
Given that you’ll probably have Labor Day off from work, perhaps anytime Labor Weekend would be in your best interest? Really, anytime in the final days of August to the first week or two of September, you’ll probably be in good shape to hold you fantasy draft with your friends. Schedule a draft at your convenience and go on about your lives as best as you can these days.
Will players get hurt during training camp? Of course, they will. This is football and it’s a game of attrition. Not all injuries will be removed from the game in the lead-up to the season beginning. The good news is not having any preseason games will ensure us of a great crop of players readily available to be drafted than ever before, as at least one start gets hurt in the preseason annually.
The other big thing to keep an eye on is when the opt-out date is. Drafting any time before that would be foolish because you don’t want to take someone with a precious draft pick and put him on your team to not play. This is why you’ll want to do your draft sometime between Labor Day Weekend and the first night of NFL action on Thursday, Sept. 10 this year. Plan accordingly.
