The Packers and Everson Griffen have a mutual interest in one another.

It’s simply odd to see a player like defensive end Everson Griffen still on the open market, especially considering he’s one of the more consistent pass rushers in the NFL. After four months on the market, the former Minnesota Viking is prepared to narrow down his choices, but one surprise team has emerged.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Green Bay Packers have shown interest in signing Griffen and that the interest is “mutual.” This is a true nightmare scenario for the Vikings, which could very well be payback for the Brett Favre saga over a decade ago.

Griffen could make Packers pass rush even more dominant.

Last offseason, the Packers went against the norm and actually spent money in free agency. After the dust settled, general manager Brian Gutekunst emerged with linebackers Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith.

In 2019, the Packers allowed 3,721 passing yards per game (14th in the league) and recorded 41 total sacks (16th in NFL). Even with the breakout performances of the Smiths, the Packers pass defense ranked in the middle of the pack. So, you can understand why Green Bay is pursuing their former divisional rival.

Griffen managed to post 41 total sacks, 24 quarterback hits and eight sacks in 15 games with the Vikings last season.  The Packers know just how dangerous Griffen can be as he recorded 53 tackles, 27 quarterback hits and 11. 5 sacks in 20 games against them. Can you blame them for wanting to add the rival to their squad? Of course not.

As Rapoport mentioned, the Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer wants Griffen to return. The Vikings have approximately $7.7 million in cap space, so a deal can be done. With Minnesota looking to compete for the NFC North this season, they absolutely must do whatever it takes to ensure he doesn’t join the rival Packers. If that were to happen, the Vikings’ chances of winning the division will take a massive hit.
