Alex Smith back in the quarterback room helps out Dwayne Haskins a ton.

The Washington Football Team got some good news on Monday. After missing all last season with what looked to be a career-ending leg injury, former Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith finds himself on the PUP list. For a guy who may have lost his leg after his gruesome injury, it is truly remarkable he’s even in a position to go out there and play again, though he probably shouldn’t.

Though The Fantasy Footballers briefly touched on this, just having Smith back in the quarterback room is great for second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins. This is a critical year for the former Ohio State Buckeyes standout and 2018 Heisman Trophy finalist. If he can’t prove he’s matured over last season, Washington might be in position to draft a new franchise quarterback in 2021.

Check out The Fantasy Footballers for all their advice.

Even though Smith is a former No. 1 overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers back in 2005, we can’t reasonably expect he’ll be playing in the NFL much longer. He’ll likely join the Washington organization in the front office as soon as he does call it a career. Regardless of if he plays another down, here is why having him back in the quarterback room is huge for Haskins’ development.

Alex Smith will be a great mentor for Dwayne Haskins in Washington.

Smith had success with the 49ers, the Kansas City Chiefs and very briefly Washington. While with San Francisco, he had served as a mentor to Colin Kaepernick. He did the same thing with Patrick Mahomes once it became crystal clear his time in Kansas City was coming to an end. Smith will help Haskins get acclimated to the speed of the NFL game faster and help him grow as a player.

There have been other great mentor quarterbacks out there, such as Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh McCown. However, neither of them were blue-chip prospects coming out of college and neither have ever sniffed a Pro Bowl. Smith’s role with the team may be more from a cerebral approach going forward, but he’ll be able to pick up on things Haskins misses and then relay them to him.

dark. Next. When should you have your fantasy football draft in 2020?

Even if Smith does come off the PUP list and can actually practice with Washington, he’ll be in the same quarterback room with Haskins and Kyle Allen, who comes over from the Carolina Panthers, along with new head coach Ron Rivera. Haskins has potential to be a sleep fantasy football player, but 2020 is all about getting the things he got wrong on the field in 2019 right. He can totally do it.
