Los Angeles Chargers sign Joey Bosa to unprecedented contract for defensive player

Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa arrived in the nick of time to training camp to avoid a fine. He was upset about the lack of a new deal, but it didn’t take long for Bosa to get that big new deal after arriving to camp.

Bosa and the Chargers agreed to a five-year, $135 million extension that ties him to LA the next six years, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

As part of the new deal, Bosa will receive $78 million in fully-guaranteed money at signing and $102 million guaranteed overall, which is a new record for a defensive player.

After lucrative deals to other defensive stalwarts like Myles Garrett, Aaron Donald and Khalil Mack in recent years, Bosa was the beneficiary as the player to reset the market.

The former No. 3 pick out of Ohio State, Bosa has been a star from the moment he stpped on the field for the Chargers. They just had to wait a little longer as he had a prolonged contract holdout as a rookie in an era when holdouts are basically eliminated with the new rookie wage scale.

Nevertheless, he proved worth the wait for Chargers fans as Bosa has proven himself to be one of the top pass-rushers and overall great defensive players in the NFL.

While he may not be happy with his placement on the NFL 100 ranking this year, a ranking that will have him below younger brother, Nick Bosa, of the San Francisco 49ers, he can rest easy knowing he has more than $100 million coming to him.

This is another example that playing at Ohio State is a great way to cash in at the next level. The younger Bosa is taking notes as is last year’s No. 2 pick Chase Young of the Washington Football Team who has to be thinking about the type of big-money deal he’ll be looking at signing in the next four or five years.
