Khalan Laborn is no longer part of the Florida State football program.
Former five-star running back Khalan Laborn is not with Florida State football any longer.
The redshirt junior running back from Virginia Beach, Virginia has been dismissed by the Florida State Seminoles football program. According to 247Sports, “Khalan Laborn has been dismissed due to violation of team policy.”
This comment came from a representative from Florida State University. There were rumors surfacing earlier on Tuesday he was being removed from the team.
Laborn was a former five-star recruit out of Virginia Beach back in 2017. He was the No. 1 player from Virginia, the No. 1 all-purpose back in the country and the No. 29 overall prospect in his recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite. Laborn committed to Florida State on July 8, 2016. He signed his LOI on Feb. 1, 2017, enrolling on the Tallahassee campus on June 9, 2017.
Khalan Laborn’s three-plus years in Tallahassee were frustrating ones.
Despite being a five-star recruit, Laborn was redshirted in his true freshman year in 2017 by then-head coach Jimbo Fisher. That would be the last year Fisher coached the ‘Noles, as he left the for the Texas A&M Aggies in the winter. Florida State would be run into the ground by former head coach Willie Taggart for a year and a half before Mike Norvell was hired this past offseason.
Injuries limited Laborn to only two games played as a redshirt freshman in 2018. While he did play in 10 games last year for the ‘Noles, Laborn only had 63 carries for 297 yards and four rushing touchdowns as a redshirt sophomore. No, it wasn’t just a lack of production that led to his tenure at Florida State being so frustrating. He did not take part in their last two bowl games.
Laborn was sent home back in 2017 ahead of the Seminoles’ Independence Bowl game vs. the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Last season, he was suspended ahead of the Sunshine Showdown vs. the in-state rival Florida Gators. He didn’t play in Florida State’s Sun Bowl date vs. the Arizona State Sun Devils last year either. This seems to have been a long, ongoing issue for the team.
As a redshirt junior, Laborn has two more years of eligibility remaining. However, we’re not sure where he’ll end up playing, if at all this fall. He’d probably have to sit out the 2020 campaign. It’s really a shame he never fully tapped into all that potential he had coming out of high school in Virginia Beach. Let’s hope he can start anew somewhere else to finish his college career strong.
Who knows what’s next for Laborn, but he won’t be playing for Norvell this fall at Florida State.
