Georgia football breakout candidate No. 1: Dominick Blaylock, WR

While Georgia has to replace Jake Fromm at quarterback with Jamie Newman, their wide receiver group does have some good things going for them, particularly with more of a risk-taker under center. The Bulldogs are returning three of their four leading wide receivers last year, including team-leading true sophomore George Pickens. However, it could be Dominick Blaylock that benefits the most from the new offense.

Also a rising sophomore, Blaylock didn’t have nearly the season that Pickens did last year. Where Pickens led UGA with 49 receptions, 727 yards and eight touchdowns, Blaylock had just 18 receptions for 310 yards, both of which were fourth on the team. However, where he shined was as a downfield playmaker.

Blaylock led the Bulldogs in terms of yards per reception (17.2) in 2019 among players who caught at least 10 passes on the year. Furthermore, that big-play ability led to the young wideout finishing second on the team in touchdowns last year with five. He’s clearly a downfield threat that can make splash plays for this offense.

With new offensive coordinator Todd Monken taking over and with Newman at quarterback, expect to see plenty of that. Yes, Pickens will play a big part in the offense still but Blaylock could be a proverbial change-of-pace player on the outside who stretches the field and, with more deep targets, drastically improve upon what he produced in his first season in Athens.
