Patriots should sign Jadeveon Clowney with newfound cap room and tick off rest of the NFL
By John Buhler
Jadeveon Clowney on the New England Patriots would make us all so mad.
Jadeveon Clowney needs a new NFL team, so what if he were to join the New England Patriots?
The former No. 1 overall pick by the Houston Texans in the 2014 NFL Draft out of South Carolina spent last season tucked away in the Pacific Northwest with the Seattle Seahawks. Even though he’s more of a run-stuffer than a sack artist at defensive end, it was a frustrating season for the former South Carolina standout. After overestimating his value this spring, he is still a free agent.
A shocking return to Seattle has been floated about in recent weeks, but with the Seahawks trading for All-Pro safety Jamal Adams with the New York Jets, getting to play for Pete Carroll for a second year seems out of the question now. What if he ends up going to another future hall of fame coach? Yes, we’re talking about Clowney going to play for the Evil Empire. Could he do it?
The New England Patriots can now afford to sign Jadeveon Clowney.
After six Patriots players opted out of the 2020 NFL season on Tuesday, New England now has the third-best situation against the salary cap for the upcoming campaign at roughly $25.6 million. It should be noted that one of them with more available payroll than the Patriots are the Cleveland Browns, who could definitely sweep back into the Clowney sweepstakes yet again.
If Clowney were to join the Patriots, it would help offset many of their losses defensively from a season ago. New England could pay him eight figures on a one-year deal to spend the 2020 season with the Patriots. They might also want to tank for Trevor Lawrence because that’s what Twitter is trying to tell us that’s what head coach Bill Belichick is up to now.
If Clowney were to come to New England, it would be a one-year rental like he was in Seattle. Joining the Patriots would aid in them remain stout defensively, as well as trolling the lowly New York Jets who will somehow convince themselves they were this close to bringing Clowney on to the roster before Belichick beat them to the punch. Clowney could definitely play the villain, too.
With ample cap space and roster spots to be filled, don’t be shocked if Clowney joins New England.
