Scottie Pippen explains why he thinks the Lakers, not the Clippers, are the favorites out of the West.

Chicago Bulls legend Scottie Pippen singled out the Los Angeles Lakers as his favorite to come out of the Western Conference in a recent interview with Mark Carman on Da Windy City podcast, a heel turn from his previous statement that the LA Clippers would reach the NBA Finals.

Pippen explained that he believes in LeBron James’ ability to unite his team and overcome adversity, considering the interrupted season and pandemic. While the Clippers arguably have more depth and can match their rival’s star power, Pippen believes that James has the transcendent talent to win the 2020 title.

His statement likely comes as no surprise to NBA fans, as James has had one of his best seasons at age 35, leading the league in assists. With an All-NBA running mate in Anthony Davis, James may have his best chance at a title since winning with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that the Clippers have outplayed the Lakers in their previous matchups this season, earning a 2-1 record head-to-head. With both Los Angeles teams the clear favorites to make the Western Conference Finals, Pippen’s Lakers prediction may not be as clear-cut as it appears.

Pippen also spoke about his perceived feud with Michael Jordan in the aftermath of the premiere of The Last Dance, and expressed concern over Giannis Antetokounmpo’s ability to lead the Bucks to the NBA Finals.
