Michigan football: 5 Wolverines poised for breakout seasons in 2020
Michigan football breakout candidate No. 1: Giles Jackson, WR
In the words of Michael Scott, “No question about it. I am ready to get hurt again.” In the Harbaugh era in Ann Arbor, we’ve seen one high-profile wide receiver after another put on a helmet but, due to the limitations of the offense, never fully pan out. Yet, when you see what wide receiver Giles Jackson brings to the table for the Wolverines, it’s hard to believe.
With Nico Collins returning, the former 4-star recruit won’t be the No. 1 pass-catcher in the offense. However, after what he flashed in his true freshman season last year, it’s difficult to not be intrigued by his potential. That’s especially true if McCaffrey or Milton is able to take a firm hold of the quarterback spot and can steady the offense.
Despite playing behind a loaded group at the position, Jackson made some splash plays. He finished his true freshman season with nine receptions for 142 yards and one touchdown. His average of 15.8 yards per reception was impressive and showcased his ability to be a big-play threat if the offense is functional.
Jackson has traits of an elite athlete but he clearly has a great feel for the position and can simply make things happen. He pairs well with the much bigger Collins but, if the quarterbacks can consistently get the ball into his hands, has the potential to be a one-man wrecking crew that leads the Wolverines in several receiving categories in the 2020 season.
