Sheldon Rankins – New Orleans Saints

Rankins has battled injuries throughout his pro career and was limited to 10 games last season because of an ankle problem.

He registered only two sacks in 2019 but when he has been at his best Rankins, a first-round pick by New Orleans in 2016, has demonstrated the potential to become a top-tier player on the interior of the defensive line.

His most recent flashes came in 2018 when Rankins finished with eight sacks and 15 quarterback hits and, entering a contract year, he has plenty of motivation to get back to that level and enjoy a belated breakout season.

The situation in New Orleans is ideal for him to return to his form of two years ago. Drew Brees and the Saints’ potent offense should put their defense in advantageous situations where New Orleans can sell out to stop the pass.

With Marcus Davenport returning from a foot injury and versatile rookie Zack Baun joining a group of outside pass rushers led by five-time Pro Bowler Cameron Jordan, the edge players in New Orleans are likely to command most of the attention of opposing offensive lines, potentially freeing up openings for Rankins to wreak havoc on the interior.

The level of talent in the Saints’ secondary should help Rankins’ cause. If he stays healthy, Rankins has the ability and the supporting cast to earn a big payday and Pro Bowl recognition.
