The newest Seattle Seahawk appears to be here to stay for the long haul

Jamal Adams’ falling out with the New York Jets was well-publicized throughout the majority of the 2020 year. After listing 10 playoff contending teams he’d like to be traded to, the Seattle Seahawks might as well have been his knight in shining armor. All it took was a pair of first-round picks over the next two years, a 2021 third-round pick and safety Bradley McDougald to get the deal done.

Even though Adams promised that he wouldn’t ask for a new contract this year from Seattle, the All-Pro safety did say his goal is to retire a Seahawk during an introductory press conference on Thursday. But, he admitted that “those things handle themselves.”

Adams sees a bright future with the Seahawks

New York Jets fans have heard these comments before from Adams, who previously said he wanted to retire as a Jet. But, contract negotiations and a battle of hard feelings got in the way.

Of course, Adams was a draft pick of previous Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan, but he was fired following the 2019 NFL Draft. Joe Douglas entered the fray, and as with any new boss of the front office, he wants to mold the team into his image. Last trade deadline, Douglas fielded calls from Adams, which the safety didn’t appreciate. Then, Adams claimed he was promised a contract offer this offseason, which Douglas denied ever doing. After a public airing of grievances through the media, Adams found a new home in Seattle.

The safety is owed $3.59 million for the 2020 season and $9.86 million in 2021, his option year. Getting a two-time Pro Bowler for less than $10 million a season is an absolute bargain. But they must be prepared for the inevitable, as Adams will no doubt want to earn a deal that gives him a higher annual salary than that of Eddie Jackson of the Chicago Bears ($14.6 million/year).

Luckily for the Seahawks, a new deal isn’t a priority for Adams right now. Adams appears happy to finally be on a contending team, so winning is more of a priority this year than securing the bag, which couldn’t possibly make general manager John Schneider any happier than he is right now.

But for now, the goal for Adams is to help clinch the Seahawks clinch a spot in Super Bowl LV.
