Stephen Jones’ latest quote on Dak Prescott negotiations is a very positive sign

After Patrick Mahomes got his payday, Dak Prescott wants next
The Dallas Cowboys might’ve missed their window to sign Prescott to an extension this offseason, as Dak seems more than willing to play under the franchise tag yet again in 2020. However, the Mississippi State product would prefer that long-term deal, as he and Ezekiel Elliott are the clear faces of the offense moving forward (sorry, Amari Cooper).
The Cowboys are no longer in the window in which they can take advantage of having a QB out-playing their rookie deal, and Prescott deserves what’s his. With Mahomes making somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 million over 12 years, Prescott, despite understanding that he’s not in that ballpark, will want to be among the top-3 paid QBs in football. That’s not an absurd request, even if it hamstrings the Cowboys moving forward.
Stephen Jones is confident a deal with Prescott will get done
“We had a great visit with him at the deadline,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told the team website. “We pushed to try to have a few more changes here and there to see if we could get it done. But he’s got such a great outlook on the Dallas Cowboys, our football team, and he’s ready to go out and win a Super Bowl, which would only create more value for him, more value for the Cowboys.”
That sounds…promising? Long-term deals aren’t reached overnight, especially when Mahomes reset the market entirely. Prescott contract rumors are everywhere, with some suggesting his asking price is downright untenable. Jones’ comments would suggest that’s not the case, unless this is all just PR talk.
“So we’re fired up about it and still have nothing but 100 percent belief in Dak and his future with the Cowboys, and that we can ultimately get a deal done. He’s special. As Jerry [Jones] and I have said, we are 110 percent behind him, and ultimately feel like we’ll get this done,” Jones continued.
It’s tough for the Cowboys to guarantee the ability to draft or sign a QB of Prescott’s value at a lesser AAV, so they’re likely to give in. It’ll be on their terms, though.
