In 1988, six wide receivers were selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Two of them are currently in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and another you could make a strong case for another despite a career shortened by injury.

The first of those choices that year was 1987 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown from the University of Notre Dame. He went sixth overall, Sterling Sharpe went to the Green Bay Packers at seven and Michael Irvin went to the Cowboys with the 11th selection. Irvin and Brown have busts in Canton, Ohio.

The former Golden Domer an immediate impact when he took the field for a Week 1 home meeting with the rival Chargers. The then-Los Angeles Raiders would come away with 24-13 victory. Brown caught just two passes for 42 yards but returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.

When it was all said and done and including 24 catches with the Buccaneers in 2004, only six players in NFL history have more receptions than Brown (1,094). He’s tied for 20th all-time with 105 total TDs, matching fabled Don Hutson. All told, he played in 240 regular-season games for the Silver and Black from 1988-2003 and is the franchise’s all-time leader in both receptions (1,070) and touchdowns (104).
