Uniform No. 1: Michigan Wolverines

Like Ohio State’s scarlet and gray, Michigan’s maize and blue is a college football tradition. Michigan began using maize and blue as official University colors in the 1860s, and by the early 1900s they had become the official colors of the football team.

The uniform itself is a classic design with a blue jersey and maize pants, along with maize numbers, and has functioned as Michigan’s main uniform since the late 1930s.

Although the color scheme and classic uniform design are both amazing, what makes Michigan’s uniform truly great is the winged helmet.

The tradition of the winged helmet dates back to 1938 when all-time great Michigan coach Fritz Crisler came to Ann Arbor from Princeton where he had previously developed a winged helmet.

And when current head coach Jim Harbaugh took over Michigan in 2015, he made the helmets even better by re-introducing the helmet stickers containing an image of a wolverine after they had been used for most years from 1969-1995.
