LeBron James and Anthony Davis mirror Kobe and Shaq with latest stat
LeBron James and Anthony Davis made some Lakers history Thursday night.
The Los Angeles Lakers returned to the floor Thursday night and asserted their dominance over the Los Angeles Clippers. Anthony Davis went for 34 points and LeBron James added 16 in a close 103-101 victory.
James obviously missed the 30-point mark, but Davis eclipsing the mark meant the duo had made some history. In fact, they did something not seen by Lakers fans since the glory days of Kobe and Shaq.
LeBron James and Anthony Davis the dynamic duo
It is so easy for fans to get used to James and Davis scoring 30 in a game. But that is no easy feat and doing it 20 times apiece is just insane.
The Lakers are top-heavy in terms of scoring with Davis averaging 26.8 points per game and James right behind him with 25.6. Kyle Kuzma is third with the respectable total of 12.5 points per game.
Kobe Bryant finished with an average of 30.0 points per game in that 2002-03 season, while Shaq was second with 27.5. Keeping with the top-heavy theme, Derek Fisher was third with 10.5 points per game. As diehard Lakers fans may remember, Bryant played in all 82 games that season and averaged nearly 42 minutes per game. Just unreal.
The fun fact this season is that James and Davis hit the feat through 64 games. Add in a pandemic and it would be easy to expect a slow start. Instead, the two combined for 50 points Thursday night and took down arguably the second-best team in basketball.
Copying the regular-season achievements of Kobe and Shaq will impress some, but titles are what matter to Lakers fans. Kobe and Shaq had a three-peat of their own and anything other than a championship this year will be considered a disappointment to fans. That may not be fair with the pandemic and all, but it is the expectation set by the franchise. Having two players go for 30 points on a nightly basis will help that cause.
