Mike Trout might be leaving the Angels to become a father
By John Buhler
Mike Trout has been placed on paternity leave ahead of the birth of his son.
Mike Trout will not be playing for the Los Angeles Angels for the next few days.
Trout has gone on paternity leave, ahead of the birth of his first child. He and his wife Jessica were expecting a due date in August. The MLB allows three days of paternity league. Trout win on it on Thursday. He can return to the Angels’ roster as early as Sunday, as long as he does not test positive for the coronavirus. The Trouts have a name picked out, but it hasn’t been revealed yet.
“I just can’t wait to meet him,” said Trout ahead of the Angels’ season opener last week. “We’re excited. Jessica has been really strong and brave. I don’t know how women do it.”
Mike Trout is temporarily leaving the Angels, but will he return soon?
Trout had contemplated opting out of the 2020 MLB season with the fear of passing on the coronavirus to his wife and thus, preventing them from spending time with their newborn son. He would not have been the only big-league star to opt-out of the season due to having newborn children joining their family. However, he decided to play this season for a revamped Angels team.
Trout may be soft-spoken, but he is the best player in baseball. He is a three-time AL MVP and stars in one of the biggest media markets in the country, albeit on the second-most popular franchise in the City of Angels. Though the Angels have only qualified for the postseason once in his career, adding a World Series champion manager in Joe Maddon to the mix may change things.
For now, the Angels must find a way to stay afloat in the AL West this season. They are 2-5 through their first seven games of the season. While eight teams will qualify for the postseason in both leagues this year, the Angels currently find themselves in the cellar of the Junior Circuit heading into the weekend. If the want to reach the postseason, they’ll need Trout to come back.
Here’s to a healthy baby, mother and a happy family for the best player in baseball.
