The Chicago Cubs third baseman’s condition is improving after voluntarily sitting out
MLB has been scrambling all week to get ahead of the variety of COVID-19 related issues across the league. The Miami Marlins had a massive outbreak that sidelined more than half their team and the St. Louis Cardinals had more than a handful of individuals tested positive for the coronavirus.
The Chicago Cubs had a scare right before first pitch on Saturday, as third baseman Kris Bryant told the team that he was dealing with gastrointestinal issues. 24 hours later, it’s been revealed that Bryant had two negatives tests, but his condition is improving, per manager David Ross. Of course, Bryant will be sitting out of Sunday’s contest against the Pittsburgh Pirates as he follows the league’s COVID-19 protocol.
Bryant did the right thing by self-reporting COVID-19 symptoms
When it comes to navigating through the tough waters that is playing through the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Cubs have been lauded for their work. Since the start of summer camp, the team has had zero positive COVID-19 tests, which Ross credited to their medical staff. The Cubs have taken the proper precautions when it comes to first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who battled Hodgkins lymphoma early on in his career.
Bryant has taken necessary precautions ever since Cincinnati Reds players Mike Moustakas and Nick Senzel self-reported symptoms to the team last weekend. Ever since, Bryant has worn a face mask while running the bases.
Through six games this season, Bryant recorded a .120 batting average and a .401 OPS with three hits, four runs scored and two runs batted in.
Bryant is reportedly set to undergo tests on Monday, but it’s unknown if he’ll be cleared by MLB in time before the start of Chicago’s game against the Kansas City Royals.
