If any team understands the NFL’s urgency in trying to play the 2020 NFL season despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Tomlin managed to lead Pittsburgh to an 8-8 campaign last year with the likes of Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges behind center for 15 games. Of course, that’s not done without incredible coaching, and a revamped defense led by the likes of TJ Watt, Cameron Heyward, Bud Dupree and Minkah Fitzpatrick, making the possibilities for the Steelers in 2020 with a healthy Ben Roethlisberger though the roof.

The regular season is set to begin in nearly a month, and Big Ben appears as ready as ever to make his recovery from an elbow injury official when the Steelers take on the New York Giants on Sept. 14.

COVID-19 has limited exactly how much we’ve seen from Roethlisberger this offseason, but he suggested earlier this year that he’d be able to participate in both OTA’s and Training Camp. If it’s any consolation, the last two quarterbacks over the age of 35 to miss at least 10 games from injury went on to post 13-win seasons the following year in Peyton Manning (Broncos) and Carson Palmer (Cardinals). Should the 38-year-old Roethlisberger experience anything remotely similar, the Steelers would consider their 2020 season a resounding success.

Pittsburgh’s receiving corps remains one of the best in the NFL, and they added rookie Chase Claypool out of Notre Dame in the second round of April’s Draft, who could emerge as a red zone option and deep threat for the Steelers as early as this season.

The AFC North is as crowded as ever, but as always, the Steelers will have a say in the winner.
