Brandon Nimmo reveals other side to Mets-Yoenis Cespedes drama
By Mark Powell
The Mets claimed Yoenis Cespedes didn’t tell them he was opting out of the season, but was that the entire story?
Miscommunications are tough, aren’t they? That appears to be the case after Sunday’s Yoenis Cespedes drama, in which the Mets released a statement saying they didn’t know where the veteran outfielder was, leaving all of us frightened for his safety. Cespedes didn’t report to the team facility, and allegedly hadn’t told Mets officials he was skipping out on the game against the Braves.
The Mets, being on the road in Atlanta, were rightly concerned, as Cespedes hotel room was empty. Later, it was revealed that Cespedes had decided to opt out of the season, but the Mets claimed he hadn’t informed them. Per teammates, Cespedes’ agent informed them before the game. So which is it?
We have a classic New York Mets drama on our hands, and Cespedes has some explaining to do
The easy explanation is that Cespedes or his agent informed his teammates, but didn’t tell anyone in the front office, which would be a gross misstep by the veteran outfielder’s representation. Given that the journey to become an MLB agent is not an easy one, and requires plenty of training on these situations, we’re going to assume that’s not the case.
The Mets giving a statement in the first place insinuated that they were scared for Cespedes’ safety, and it would’ve been tough to blame them, assuming they actually didn’t know where he was.
As always, both parties are likely at fault, and Cespedes’ days as a Met might as well be over. The 34-year-old’s contract runs out at the end of the 2020 season, and after this, it’s tough to see the two sides reconciling.
