Chicago Bears safety Jordan Lucas became the team’s second player to opt out of the 2020 NFL season due to coronavirus concerns.

Chicago Bears safety Jordan Lucas joined defensive tackle Eddie Goldman among the team’s players to opt out of the upcoming NFL season due to coronavirus concerns, joining a growing list of players who have decided to do the same.

Lucas was signed in the offseason as a free agent from the Kansas City Chiefs, and figured to be a special teamer who could see some snaps in a backup safety role. Now, the Bears will be forced to replace him before the 2020 season gets underway.

Bears safety depth takes a hit with Lucas’ decision

While Lucas may not be the biggest name to opt out of the season, the NFL has to be concerned by decisions like his. Most teams have seen players opt out — the Patriots, in particular, have been decimated — and the players seem to believe that the league’s plans simply are not enough.

MLB’s struggles in containing the virus have to give pause to players after the NFL similarly decided not to adopt a bubble approach like the NBA’s.

Lucas’ best season came in 2018 with Kansas City, when he posted 32 tackles, one interception, and two passes defensed in four starts. With a void at safety after HaHa Clinton-Dix’s departure, Lucas could have had the opportunity to at least compete for snaps.

While the 27-year-old defensive back will not be part of the team’s immediate plans, the Bears will be able to roll over his contract to 2021. Regardless, Chicago hopes to return to its 2018 form in the upcoming season, with a dominant defense overcoming an uninspiring offense to a playoff berth.
