Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence supports Pac-12 player boycott
Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence commended a group of Pac-12 players on Twitter for their decision to boycott the 2020 season.
Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence expressed his support via Twitter to a group of Pac-12 players who issued a series of demands they want to be met in a story on The Players Tribune.
The statement of solidarity from Lawrence may be jarring for the NCAA, as the Tigers signal-caller is one of the Heisman favorites and the potential top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. With players including Washington Huskies cornerback Elijah Molden asking that their demands be heard regarding player safety due to COVID-19, the future of the 2020 NCAA season could be in doubt.
Trevor Lawrence lends his support to the Pac-12 football player movement.
Molden is one of many Pac-12 players threatening to boycott the season, with societal inequities, public health concerns, and the economic exploitation of athletes among the concerns that athletes hold.
Lawrence has emerged as one of the NCAA’s loudest voices during the 2020 offseason, taking a hard stance against racial injustice and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. He earned the respect of many fans in the process, and his platform is arguably the largest of any college athlete.
While Lawrence does not appear to be opting out of the 2020 season, his support for others’ concerns, could encourage players in other major conferences to speak out. Players have to be concerned that their campuses could be breeding grounds for coronavirus, and the health and safety of athletes and their families need to come first.
With Lawrence in their corner, it may be easier for players to make the decision that is best for them and not one that they feel pressured into.
