FanDuel DFS Golf: PGA Championship player selections

This week, FanDuel will provide a large number of contests for the first major of the year, the 2020 PGA Championship! Let’s take a look at this event from a fantasy golf perspective.

Before I dive into my FanDuel player selections let’s take a look at the golf course the field will play and some key trends to consider as you compile your DFS lineups for this week’s event.

The 2020 PGA Championship will be played at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, California. This track is a par 70 that measures 7,234 yards. TPC Harding Park is a classical, tree lined track that features tight undulating fairways. It should be noted that this golf course only has two par five holes. The greens at TPC Harding Park feature a mixture of bent and poa annua grass.

Key Trends

  • Seven of the last eight winners of the PGA Championship finished in the top 12 of the event that was played prior to the PGA Championship.
  • Since 2011, the winner of the PGA Championship has averaged over 300 yards in driving distance for the season upon arrival at the event.

Let’s shift our focus to what I love doing the most. Here are my FanDuel player selections for the 2020 PGA Championship!

Justin Thomas $11,600

The 2017 PGA Championship winner has been playing some outstanding golf this season. Let me be more specific. Thomas has played 14 tournaments this season. In those 14 events played, Thomas has nine top ten finishes, including three wins. One of those three wins occurred at last week’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis.

Thomas also checks the box for me from a statistical perspective. The American is currently ranked third in strokes gained approach (.983) and first in strokes gained tee to green (1.786) on the PGA Tour.

Brooks Koepka $11,400

Koepka fired a first round 62 at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational en route to an eventual second place finish. Additionally, in relation to the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational field, upon completion of four rounds of play, Brooks ranked first in strokes gained approach, second in strokes gained ball striking, and third in strokes gained tee to green.

Daniel Berger $9,700

Berger has five top five finishes in his last six events on the PGA Tour, including a win at the Charles Schwab Challenge in June. The three time PGA Tour winner has shown that he can play well when the lights are shining the brightest. Let me provide a few examples. Berger finished tenth at the 2016 Masters, 12th at the 2018 PGA Championship, and sixth at the 2018 United States Open.

Abraham Ancer $9,400

The 29 year old Mexican has four top 15 finishes in his last five tournaments on the PGA Tour, including a second place finish at the RBC Heritage in June.

Chez Reavie $8,500

The 38 year old American has three consecutive top 22 finishes on the PGA Tour, including a sixth place result at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational last week.

I also like the fact that Reavie has shown previously that he can perform at a high level in major championships. He finished third at the 2019 United States Open and 12th at the 2018 PGA Championship.

Ryan Palmer $8,000

The American has six top 15 finishes on the PGA Tour this season, including a second place result at the Memorial Tournament three weeks ago.
