Does Georgia have the best quarterback room in college football?
By John Buhler
What if Georgia football has the best quarterback room in the country?
It won’t be a lack of talent in the quarterback room that will be Georgia football’s undoing in 2020.
In the last few years, the Georgia Bulldogs have had plenty of talent at quarterback on their roster. However, Jake Fromm earning the starting job as a true freshman in 2017 and never relinquishing it over the next three years wasn’t without a price. His successor Jacob Eason transferred to the Washington Huskies in 2018, while Justin Fields left for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2019.
Entering the 2020 season, Eason was a fourth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts, Jake Fromm a fifth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills and Fields is projected to be the a Heisman Trophy finalist, as well as a top-two pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. With a dearth of in-game experience, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and his staff hit the transfer portal twice this offseason.
Shortly after the calendar flipped, Georgia won the Jamie Newman sweepstakes, as the talented starting quarterback formerly of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons transferred to Georgia for his redshirt senior season. Newman may have played at a non-traditional power, but he has first-round talent, as he could be some combination of Cam Newton or Jalen Hurts for the Dawgs.
A few months later, former USC Trojans starter JT Daniels made his way to Athens, shocking everyone when he too transferred to Georgia. Having lost his starting job in Los Angeles to Kedon Slovis after tearing his ACL, Daniels was even more shockingly granted immediate eligibility at Georgia. The redshirt sophomore has three years left to play in his college football career.
Will Georgia football’s talented quarterback room result in a championship?
Seemingly overnight, Georgia went from having nothing but questions at the quarterback position to having arguably the deepest and most talented room in the country. Where else in the Power 5 are the there two quarterbacks who could start right now, be immediately draft eligible and would go in the top 100 picks of the 2021 NFL Draft if they were to enter it?
So in terms of having the best quarterback room in the country right now, it’s hard to argue against what Georgia has in Daniels and Newman now co-headlining it. Backing them up are a pair of former four-star recruits in Carson Beck and D’Wan Mathis, as well as a proven native son journeyman Stetson Bennett. Iron will sharpen iron down in the Classic City for the Red and Black.
If there are other programs we could argue that may be as talented as Georgia’s quarterback room, let’s hone in our focus at two teams the Dawgs will probably have to beat if they want to win their first national title since 1980: The Alabama Crimson Tide and the Clemson Tigers. Could either of them have better quarterback rooms than Georgia by the end of the 2020 NCAA season?
For Alabama, Daniels and Newman are better than Crimson Tide incumbent Mac Jones. Newman has transformed himself into a serious draft prospect after arriving on the Winston-Salem campus four years ago. Daniels was a blue-chip prospect coming out fo Southern California. Jones is a fine player, but his ceiling as a college player isn’t on par with what Daniels or Newman have.
What gives Alabama some level of intrigue in this regard is five-star true freshman Bryce Young. Interestingly enough, Young and Daniels share the same alma mater in Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California. If Young is as good as we think he can be, he could be something akin to what Tua Tagovailoa was at Alabama before him. That’d be a huge boost at quarterback.
As for Clemson, the Tigers have arguably the best quarterback in college football in Trevor Lawrence. He is projected to go No. 1 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft and be something like the next John Elway or Peyton Manning professionally. As with Alabama, it’s all about who they have backing him up in true freshman D.J. Uiagalelei. He might put Clemson over the top at here.
Essentially, Uiagalelei replaces Chase Brice as Lawrence’s backup at Clemson. Brice now leads the Duke Blue Devils after serving in a backup role at Clemson for a few years. Given that Clemson should be blowing teams out in ACC play, look for Uiagalelei to get ample playing time as a true freshman. If he shines in backup duty, this might be the deepest quarterback room in the country.
Overall, you could make a compelling argument for any of these three Power 5 institutions for having the best quarterback room in the country. In terms of what we’ve seen so far out of two guys, Georgia has the slightest of edges. However, if Young beats out Jones at Alabama or Uiagalelei looks fantastic in the second half of blowout games for Clemson, it could be the Tigers.
Georgia is good hands in the quarterback room, but only time will tell if it’s the best in the nation.
