1. Baker Mayfield finally has protection

There’s no sugar-coating the fact that Mayfield took a big step backward in 2019. The Browns desperately need his career to start heading in a positive direction if they’re going to have any hopes of making postseason noise in 2020.

The good news is that the Browns can point to a big exterior factor for Mayfield’s struggles. Their offensive line was porous in pass protection a season ago. The group was particularly weak at both offensive tackle spots. Mayfield saw entirely too much edge pressure coming his way in 2019.

To the credit of the Browns front office, they addressed both spots in a major way this offseason. Conklin got a big free agency deal to solidify things on the right side of the offensive line. His deal might be a slight overpay, but it will be worth every penny to the Browns if it gets Mayfield back on track.

Spending a first round pick on Jedrick Wills to man the left tackle spot could turn into an even better investment. He’s got the size and quickness required to stymy elite edge rushers at the point of attack. The mean streak he shows in the run game should also help Browns keep their running game on schedule.

Next. Browns can't count on just Austin Hooper to fix Baker Mayfield. dark

If the Browns protect Mayfield in 2020 he’s going to have some huge passing games. That could be just enough to lead Cleveland to the promised land of a Super Bowl title.
