Derek Carr isn’t opting out of the season because he wants respect on his name!

It’s been a wild ride for Derek Carr ever since he entered the NFL in 2014. The Oakland Raiders took him in the second round of that year’s draft and by 2016, he was considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

That 2016 season saw Carr throw for 3,937 yards, 28 touchdowns and six interceptions as the Raiders went 12-4, nearly winning the AFC West but instead having to settle for a Wild Card spot in the playoffs. It was their first trip to the playoffs since the 2002 season.

A bad loss to the Chiefs and an injury in the second-to-last game of the regular season foiled Carr’s chances at winning MVP, and despite a lot of hype surrounding him the next year, he never got back to that 2016 version everyone saw.

Derek Carr is planning on playing in 2020 because he wants to prove that he’s a good quarterback.

Carr was quoted as saying that he’s “tired of being disrespected” and that’s why he’s going to play this year despite the COVID-19 pandemic that has led to 40-plus players opting out. It’s true that Carr takes a beating from people, but it’s because he hasn’t been that 2016 player since then.

When Carr was wheeling and dealing in 2016, his offensive line was incredibly good, only allowing 16 sacks on him the entire season. When a quarterback has an offensive line that can protect him that well, he’s going to have a good season.

It’s tougher to be a good quarterback when the offensive line isn’t as reliable, and that’s what Carr has found out the hard way ever since, being sacked 51 and 29 times, respectively, in each of the last two seasons.

It’s not like Derek Carr has been bad by any means though. He’s thrown for over 4,000 yards the past two seasons and had 21 touchdowns to eight interceptions this past year. His biggest problem is that he’s very much a dink-and-dunk kind of quarterback now and doesn’t take the deep shot. His completion percentage is proof of this with a 70.4 completion percentage in 2019.

Carr can say whatever he wants, but the main reason he’s playing this year is because he knows his seat is hot. Not only is it the first year that the team will be playing in Las Vegas, but Marcus Mariota was signed and could end up being a better option for the Raiders.

Carr might claim he’s playing because of a lack of respect, but in reality, it’s because he knows if he doesn’t play this year, he won’t be a member of the Las Vegas Raiders past 2020.
