Fulham is back in the Premier League
With an extra-time thriller, Fulham is back in the Premier League.
In a winner-take-all match for promotion to the Premier League, Fulham pulled away late to down rivals Brentford 2-1 and book the coveted final spot in next year’s EPL table.
The match started quietly and ended scoreless, needing extra time to decide a winner. In the 105th minute, Fulham found the breakthrough, with Joe Bryan scoring off a free-kick to give the Cottagers the lead. In the second extra time period, Bryan struck again, this time with a stellar give-and-go, to secure the match.
Brentford added one in the waning moments, but it was not enough. With the win, Fulham earned a promotion to the Premier League to make its way back to England’s biggest footballing stage after a disappointing relegation last season.
Fulham will now look for a permanent stay in the Premier League.
A team that became a staple in the Premier League with a decade-long run from 2001 to 2014, Fulham fell off since Shahid Khan’s ownership and have spent most of the time under his tenure in the EFL Championship.
With a revolving door of managers and an inability to start the season strong, Fulham failed to make its way back to the EPL until 2018, where it took an incredible 23-match unbeaten streak to do it.
Their time in the Premier League was short-lived, though, with three managers that season alone. Scott Parker remained the man in charge amid relegation and has proved his value, bringing the team back to the EPL after a single season in the Championship.
Fulham is the final team to earn a promotion, joining Leeds United and West Brom. The three historic clubs are together again for the first time since the ’02-’03 season in what feels like a flashback to the past as one of England’s oldest clubs joins the picture.
With next year’s Premier League table now completed, the short wait for the season can begin, as Fulham starts its quest to rediscover Premier League success in just a month’s time.
