Tre’Davious White unsure if he’ll play for Bills in 2020 or opt out

With the coronavirus pandemic forcing sports leagues to take unprecedented measures to continue to play, many athletes have decided to opt-out of playing their respective sport this season and will return once the virus is no longer a significant threat.

Although the NFL is not slated to kick off its season until September, players are returning to training camp and some players are taking the opportunity to opt-out of the season. Notable players, such as Devin Funchess and Nate Solder, have previously announced their intention to not suit up this season, and with the opt-out deadline coming up on Thursday more players may decide to forgo the season.

One player who is still considering opting out is Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White.

White had the best season of his career last year, which catapulted him into the conversation of best cornerbacks in the league. But he now faces a difficult decision on whether or not to play this fall.

White is entering the last year of his rookie contract

This upcoming season is the last year of White’s four-year rookie contract that he signed back in 2017, but there is a fifth-year option for the 2021 season. Regardless of that, if White is able to perform well again in 2020, the Bills would want to lock him up in a long term deal where he would receive a large payday.

But that payday hinges on White being able to have another high-level season in 2020, and if he opts out he is essentially putting his career on hold. White would then return in 2021 on his much less lucrative rookie deal than if he were to play well again this season and then be able to cash out soon after.

But there is another side to the coin in that White has an 11-month old baby who he wants to make sure is safe as possible, along with the rest of his family.

Although White has a very tough decision to make, and not a lot of time to make it, he stressed that he is not concerned about his income possibly increasing or decreasing.

Regardless of whether or not White plays, he will make the decision that is best for him and his family. But if he decides to opt-out, it will certainly hurt the Bills and their secondary.
