Max Scherzer left his start Wednesday night after one inning.

Max Scherzer took the mound Wednesday night for the Washington Nationals in what appeared to be his usual routine outing. The ace had 21 strikeouts through his first two starts and ended up having a bit of a rough first inning, throwing 27 pitches and allowing one run.

This was still nothing worthy of being pulled from the game. Yet that is what ended up happening when Scherzer did not return to the mound for the second inning. Nationals fans are now wondering what is going on.

Max Scherzer out after one but will he be healthy to make his next start?

This is not a good sign. Whatever Scherzer is dealing with was bad enough to force him out of the game. That is not something usually seen from the intense man known to grunt when firing a fastball toward his catcher.

Right now everyone is still waiting for an update. The initial fear is he suffered a serious injury, which was a concern for all players with all the stopping and starting done before the start of the 2020 season. The Nationals had a full series against the Miami Marlins postponed as well.

This mystery ailment comes on the same night the team finally got Juan Soto back into the starting lineup. One star returns, the other one departs.

Scherzer is an absolute force who has won two Cy Young Awards with the Nationals and finished top three in voting during his other two years in town. He is one of the best pitchers in the game and his absence during a shortened season is just bad news for baseball in general.

The hope is he was removed just to be safe. We will have to wait and see if the optimism pays off.
