Marvin Wilson doesn’t have respect for players opting out of the 2020 college football season.

The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown everyone for a loop and that includes the sports industry, as we’ve seen the NBA, NHL, MLS, and MLB put their seasons on hold and resume months later than normal.

College football is being affected by the coronavirus too, as it’s forced conferences to move to conference-only schedules and to allow a significant smaller amount of fans in the gates on Saturdays this fall.

It’s also brought upon a major decision for these young men: Do they suit up and play in 2020 or do they opt out and not take the risk of potentially catching the virus?

Marvin Wilson of Florida State says that those who opt out are quitters.

Wilson, who is looking like he could be a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, feels like he has worked too hard to not play in 2020. He thinks those that are making the decision to not play are taking the easy way out.

"“I think that is just taking the easy way out. For me personally, I came back here. I have work here to do in Tallahassee, and I’m going to get that done.”"

Wilson is obviously entitled to his own opinion, but this situation is different than most. Normally if a player was opting out and looking ahead to the draft, it would be a perplexing move, but right now our country is in the midst of a pandemic unlike anything we’ve seen for decades.

Some players might be opting out because they simply don’t feel the risk is worth it, but others are doing so because either they or someone they know is high-risk when it comes to the coronavirus. If they have a high-risk relative and the player then goes on to spread it to that relative, it could be catastrophic.

It’s great that Marvin Wilson is ready to suit up and play, but these comments are insensitive, especially considering how much damage the coronavirus has done in such a short time.

The fact that he’s healthy and his family appears healthy enough for him to make this decision is good for him, but not everyone is in the same boat and as fortunate as he is.
