The Washington Football Team eradicates its former name from FedEx Field.
There’s no use for an offensive nickname when you’re The Washington Football Team.
For the 2020 NFL season, the NFC East franchise that calls the nation’s capital home will be known as The Washington Football Team. It’s not creative at all, but it’s certainly an improvement over what they used to be for over 80 years. Eventually, Washington will have a nickname its entire fanbase can be proud of. For now, it’s about eradicating an awful past from FedEx Field.
Yes, the organization had all names, images, logos and slogans associated with the former name removed from FedEx Field. The team will keep the same burgundy and gold color scheme, which we’re all totally cool with because what a fantastic combination. This year, the team will have their jersey numbers on their helmets as if they were playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Sometimes, you just have to start over, like the Washington Football Team.
It’s a new era of football in Washington. Former Chicago Bears linebacker and Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera will bring respectability to this franchise as their new head coach. Carolina was in the sewer when he arrived in 2011. Carolina won three straight division titles from 2013 to 2015, making it all the way to Super Bowl 50 in 2015. He’s the greatest coach in Panthers history.
Washington used the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on former Ohio State Buckeyes defensive end Chase Young. During his junior season in Columbus, Young took home every major defensive award he was up for. The Bednarik Award winner was a finalist for the 2019 Heisman Trophy. He could be the best defensive talent Washington has had since the late Sean Taylor.
Though Rivera and Young specialize on the defensive side of the ball, Washington has a former first-round pick in Dwayne Haskins at quarterback. Along with his former Ohio State teammate in wide receiver Terry McLaurin, look for the Washington passing offense to be a tad more vibrant than it was a year ago. We can’t expect the organization to be as chaotic as it was in 2019.
Washington is proving to us that change is a good thing, no matter how long it takes to embrace it.
