If the Mets fall out of contention in the NL East then Stroman will suddenly become one of the hottest names on the trade market. The Yankees might struggle to make a deal with their neighbors, but there are plenty of reasons to think a trade between New York’s two teams would make a ton of sense.

Stroman’s upcoming free agency makes him a significant flight risk for the Mets. The organization has to carefully consider whether or not they can afford the public relations nightmare of losing him to the Yankees in free agency without receiving any compensation. Getting a quality prospect or two might be the best move they can salvage.

The Yankees would prefer to deal for an arm under team control, but Stroman’s talent is going to trump those concerns. He’s good enough for Cashman to consider dealing a major league ready player like Clint Frazier to put his package over the top.

Stroman isn’t in Cole’s league as a starter, but he is a guy who can take the ball for Boone in the postseason. That should be the sort of starter the Yankees are targeting over the next few weeks. Prying Stroman away from the Mets might be difficult and expensive, but it isn’t impossible.
