Washington RB Derrius Guice released after domestic violence arrest

Derrius Guice has been arrested and charged with domestic violence.
Ron Rivera and the Washington Football Team looked ready to usher in a new era with Dwayne Haskins at quarterback and Derrius Guice behind him at running back. The latter half of this dynamic duo didn’t make to the beginning of the season, however, as Guice was arrested for what sounds like a ghastly incident with his significant other.
The Washington Post is reporting that Guice was charged with one count of strangulation, which is a felony in Virginia, as well as three counts of assault and battery and one count of destruction of property.
Guice was immediately released by Washington, and few can blame them for acting so decisively.
Derrius Guice was supposed to have a breakout season in 2020.
Guice broke out in 2016 at LSU, as he was just seven yards shy of 1,500 total yards while scoring 16 touchdowns. He followed that up by totaling 1,375 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior. While projected to be a first-round selection, Washington was able to nab him at pick No. 59 in the 2018 NFL Draft, as several teams thought that Guice was immature and “high-maintenance.” Incidents like this back that assessment up.
Injuries limited Guice to just five games last season, but he managed to run for 5.8 yards per carry while scoring three times. While ageless wonder Adrian Peterson looked ready to secede the RB1 role to Guice this season, he will be called into action once again now that Guice’s behavior has earned him a one-way ticket out of DC.
Guice’s talent as a runner was always exceptional, and he finally had a role as a featured back in a run-heavy offense waiting for him with Washington in 2020. Unfortunately, his off-field transgressions have made him so radioactive that his NFL career might be over. Just when the noise was starting to die down in Washington, Guice gives them this PR nightmare to handle in what has become a nightmare offseason.
