Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Ronald Jones shared some of the advice that Tom Brady has given him, and he’d be wise to listen if he wants a larger role.

Buccaneers running back Ronald Jones shared the pass-catching advice that new quarterback Tom Brady has given him, via the team’s website, shedding some light on what the six-time Super Bowl champion looks for in his running backs and giving Jones a blueprint to break out in 2020.

Jones saw massive statistical improvement in 2019 after a poor rookie season but will need to improve as a pass-catcher if he hopes to gain Brady’s trust. The veteran quarterback loves to throw to his running backs, as evidenced by James White’s production in New England.

However, Jones managed 309 receiving yards in his second season, a figure which will need to improve if he hopes to hold off rookie Ke’Shawn Vaughn on the depth chart. However, head coach Bruce Arians stated that Jones will take on lead back duties, and Brady appears ready to work with him.

According to Jones, Brady has told him to “get low in my routes and run my routes like I already have the ball.” The third-year back went on to explain that he focused too much on reading the defense during the play in prior years, and hopes to do a better job of making pre-snap reads with Brady under center in 2020.

While Tampa Bay has a loaded pass-catching group headlined by Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Rob Gronkowski, having Jones emerge as a threat out of the backfield could elevate the offense to unforeseen heights.

With the tight ends and receivers already commanding plenty of coverage, using Jones in an Alvin Kamara-like role could make the Bucs unstoppable. Pass protection will still be something to work on for the former second-round pick, but Brady appears to have bought in on his potential, and the prospect of a breakout year from the USC alum should scare opposing defenses.
