The Big Ten’s decision to try to play football in the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic could mean opt-outs from some of Michigan’s NFL hopefuls.

The Big Ten made the decision to cancel its fall football season on Tuesday with designs to play in the spring. However, for NFL prospects aiming to get to the next level, opting out of a spring season may be the only choice to align with the traditional timeline and stay healthy.

For the Michigan Wolverines, these five players will likely be among those who skip a potential fall season for an opportunity to land in the NFL.

Jalen Mayfield, OT

Jalen Mayfield is the only underclassman on this list, and for good reason. He performed admirably at the right tackle position in 2019, and as the offensive line’s only returning starter, had high expectations in 2020. Playing at one of football’s most sought-after positions, Mayfield was already likely to see early looks from the NFL, and can now opt for NFL stability rather than another turbulent year in college.

Nico Collins, WR

Nico Collins has been a fantastic boundary threat for the Wolverines and could be a commanding red zone target at the NFL level. The senior has unreal size at 6’4″ and excels in contested catch situations. He would likely be picked in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft based on his athleticism alone.

Kwity Paye, Edge rusher

Kwity Paye is another physical phenom at a premium position, and he has the type of athleticism that NFL teams love at the edge rusher position. His lack of polish could hurt him, but as a senior, the NFL Draft may be his only option if the Big Ten holds a spring season.

Ambry Thomas, CB

Ambry Thomas was excellent in coverage for Michigan during his junior season, and that should be enough to give him some security regarding his NFL standing. Assuming that other conferences cancel their seasons, the underrated senior could move up draft boards with teams paying more attention to his junior tape.

Aidan Hutchinson, DE

Aidan Hutchinson received fringe 2021 first-round buzz in some offseason mock drafts and was named one of PFF’s 50 best draft-eligible players for the 2020 season along with the aforementioned Paye. Despite tallying just 4.5 sacks in 2019, he is a disruptive force along the defensive line, and there will certainly be plenty of NFL interest.
