Ohio State football won’t be in the College Football Playoff this year due to the Big Ten’s decision to postpone the season.

After everything hit the fan this weekend regarding the Big Ten and whether they’d have sports this fall or not, the verdict is in and there will not be sports in the conference in the fall. This means no Ohio State football in 2020.

Instead, the conference is hoping to move football to the spring, which seems unlikely, but we’ll have to see what happens.

With the Big Ten’s decision to forego sports this fall, the road got easier for the Alabamas, Clemsons, and Oklahomas out there, as Ohio State football won’t be suiting up and taking the field this year.

Ohio State football would have surely been a College Football Playoff contender in 2020.

Unless something drastic, such as this pandemic, struck, the Buckeyes were going to be in the thick of the playoff hunt. They had a stacked roster headlined by quarterback Justin Fields and their revised schedule was pretty easy for the most part.

Fields not getting to play this year is especially painful, as he’d have surely been a Heisman Trophy hopeful. He was last year in his first year as a Buckeye and was looking to build on that in year two with Ohio State.

This was a huge year for Fields because he’s already thought to be one of the top two quarterback prospects in next year’s draft. He might still be drafted highly next year, but the opportunity to build on his 2019 campaign would have been big for the Buckeyes quarterback.

With OSU not in the hunt and no Big Ten schools being able to partake, it opens things up for other conferences and other programs to take the vacant spot now. It’s a shame for college football and while there has been talk that the conference will delay things until the spring, that doesn’t seem like a realistic plan.

dark. Next. Will Justin Fields Play in Ohio State's Spring Season?

Ohio State is always a threat to win it all every year, but they won’t be in 2020. This year has been a huge kick in the butt for everyone.
