We may have a college football season but no College Football Playoff
While the Big 12, SEC, and ACC appear to be moving forward with their football seasons, the future of this year’s College Football Playoff is uncertain.
Despite the fact that the Big 12, SEC, and ACC appear to be moving forward with their fall football seasons as scheduled, the decisions by the Big Ten and Pac-12 to cancel their seasons have caused some uncertainty regarding the upcoming season’s College Football Playoff.
Without two of the Power Five conferences, some fans would already decry a playoff at year’s end as illegitimate, but with the NCAA landscape in an unprecedented spot amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby admits that teams have no real idea what a postseason could look like.
Much like the regular season, the College Football Playoff is in question
The college football season was already likely to look different in 2020, but a year devoid of the College Football Playoff is an unwelcome development for many. Most fans have criticized the BCS methodology, and naming a national champion simply based on polls is outdated.
However, without fans able to be in attendance, the College Football Playoff may not be viable without a coronavirus vaccine. Per The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel, the fate of the entire event is in limbo at the moment.
The lack of a College Football Playoff would not be the season’s most jarring development considering the fact that two of the Power Five conferences pulled the plug on the fall season, but it would certainly serve as the finishing touch on a highly irregular season.
With meetings likely to take place regarding the fate of the event and legitimacy concerns that will need to be quelled, a decision is not likely to come any time soon, as Bowlsby said.
The three remaining major conferences must first prove that the season can go off without a hitch, or the whole operation could be quickly shut down well before the postseason comes around.
