Latest Todd McShay mock draft has Bears taking a QB early
According to Todd McShay’s latest mock draft, Trey Lance is the pick for the Chicago Bears.
Todd McShay has the Chicago Bears drafting North Dakota State Bison quarterback Trey Lance in his 2021 mock draft. Mitchell Trubisky is under contract for one more season and will be a free agent in 2021. He was drafted second overall by the Bears in 2017.
Lance led the Bison to another FCS National Championship as they finished the season 16-0. Lance is a dual-threat on the football field. He threw for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns, and ran for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns. He earned a long list of accolades including 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game Most Outstanding Player, the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award, STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award, CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year, FCS ADA Offensive Player of the Year and Phil Steele FCS Offensive Player of the Year to name a few.
What would the Bears get by drafting Trey Lance?
He would give the Bears a young quarterback who has the ability to throw the deep ball, buy time in the pocket to make a play and use his legs to get the offense big gains. Lance redshirted for the Bison in 2018. Under first-year head coach and former Bison defensive coordinator Matt Entz, his game took off and so did the NDSU offense.
If the Bears were to draft him, he’d likely have a shot at the starting job since Trubisky will be a free agent. It’s unclear whether he will re-sign with the team. Lance would then be in a quarterback competition with Super Bowl Champion Nick Foles who’s under contract with the Bears through 2023.
Lance is a playmaker and he would give the Chicago Bears a burst of energy they need at that position. Adding offensive linemen should be priority No. 2 if they’re going to go get him midway through the first round. Over Trubisky’s three seasons under center, he’s been sacked 93 times.
