Another Cardinals staffer tests positive for COVID-19
The Cardinals are dealing with another positive COVID-19 test.
The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly planning to return to the field Saturday against the Chicago White Sox. This will end a hiatus that began July 30 and has the team sitting with a 2-3 record in mid-August.
However, more bad news was reported by ESPN’s Buster Olney. The news is that yet another staffer tested positive for COVID-19.
Cardinals still plan to play despite another setback
Olney notes in his tweet that this is not shutting the team down once again. They are even planning to have everyone drive to Chicago as they await the latest test results to come back.
There are still so many questions surrounding the team including potential injury risks after such a long layoff and how many games will be played throughout the rest of the season. This is all before wondering how MLB will determine the Cardinals’ playoff eligibility.
But all those questions are pushed aside until the team actually gets on the field and plays another game. The plan right now is to play Saturday, even after this new positive test. The team is taking precautions, but one more positive test from a player could end up shutting down their season for good.
This situation became inevitable when MLB decided to go without a bubble for the season. Players were relied upon to be safe and some on the Cardinals were even seen out pretending like nothing bad was going on in the world. There is also the possibility of just catching the virus when slipping up even for a moment.
We are past the point of the blame game and the hope now is the Cardinals can finish their season. Getting on the field Saturday would be a major step forward and would put the team back on a day-by-day basis after this initial outbreak.
