Cowboys’ DeMarcus Lawrence’s pregnant wife talked him into playing this season

Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was considering opting out of the 2020 season, but his pregnant wife talked him out of it.

Due to rookie mini-camp after being drafted in the second round out of Boise State, Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence missed the birth of his son in 2014. His wife Sasha is due to give birth to a daughter on Oct. 16, and he has vowed not to miss it.

The backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic led to Lawrence thinking about opting out of the 2020 season. He is more established now, entering the second year of a five-year, $105 million contract extension. So sitting out a year would not jeopardize his future, and the Cowboys would welcome back one of their best defensive players when he was ready again next year.

Talking to reporters after the Cowboys’ first helmets-and-shells practice on Friday, Lawrence said his wife would hear no such talk about him opting out.

“My decision was made by my wife,” “She basically told me there’s no way possible that I could miss this season.”

“My wife is taking care of home. I respect her so much. I know she’ll do a great job. I just got to focus on football right now and when I’m able to get back home, I’ll be there.”

Sasha Lawrence spoke to USA TODAY Sports.

“I just told him: ‘On my end, I’ll be all right,” “‘On your end, you’ll be all right.’ And we’ll just figure this thing out. ”

“In life we’re both going to have to make sacrifices. And if this is one thing we have to sacrifice – me being the only parent at home – that’s what I’ve got to do, and I’m totally fine with it.”

Lawrence only had five sacks in 2019. But he reached double-digit sacks in each of the previous two seasons, and the defensive line additions of Gerald McCoy and Everson Griffen will make his life easier this year.
