Justin Fields won’t be taking the field for Ohio State this year, but what would throw a wrench in the college football machine is if he transferred back to Georgia to win a national title.

When college football fans were first introduced to Justin Fields, he was the backup quarterback of the Georgia Bulldogs, sitting behind Jake Fromm, who firmly held onto the starting job at the time.

Fields didn’t get to do much as a freshman. He appeared in 12 games, but in limited action, attempting just 39 passes and completing 27 of them for 328 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 266 yards and another four touchdowns during the 2018 season for the Bulldogs.

Unfortunately, a baseball player at Georgia made racist comments directed at Fields during a game and that paved the way for him to make the decision to transfer.

Fields chose Ohio State as his next landing spot and he did not disappoint during his first year with the Buckeyes, tossing for 3,273 yards and a whopping 41 touchdowns (to just three interceptions) while adding 484 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.

It was such an impressive campaign that Fields was a Heisman Trophy finalist and positioned himself to be a top-10 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, if not a top-5 pick.

Because the Big Ten postponed football to the spring, Ohio State won’t be taking the field this fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic and that means no Fields vying for a Heisman or the team competing for a title. It also means his career with the Buckeyes is likely over, as there’s no way he’d want to compete in spring football if he’s planning on going pro next year.

It’s disappointing, sure, but there is one far-fetched idea if Fields wanted to play in 2020.

Justin Fields transferring back to Georgia and playing this year would be quite the story.

It seems odd to discuss Fields potentially transferring back to a school where racist comments were made toward him, but this isn’t the first buzz that’s come of this. Apparently, when he first arrived on campus in Columbus, Fields wasn’t sure if wanted to stay and contemplated transferring back to his original school.

Obviously, Fields made the right choice. Meanwhile, as a Buckeye, he became one of the best quarterbacks in college football and led his team to a College Football Playoff spot.

Seeing him do the same thing as a member of the team he originally wanted to play for and helping get them a title (which will be easier with teams like Ohio State out of the way) would be an awesome story that we all need right now.

The Bulldogs are primed with talent as always and would welcome Fields back with open arms. He’d give them that extra boost they needed when it came to vying for a title and could be what finally pushes Georgia over their rivals Alabama.

Georgia has been the preferred destination for a pair of starting quarterbacks this offseason with Wake transfer Jamie Newman in line to start and USC’s JT Daniels coming shortly thereafter. Both are eligible this fall, but if Fields wanted to come back to Georgia, he’d be the starter the second he announced his intentions to come back to Athens.

And with Fields, Georgia is the SEC favorite and potentially the national championship favorite over Clemson.

Of course, this is all up to Fields who is waiting to see what the Big Ten’s plans are for a potential spring season before making any plans on his immediate and long-term future.
