The Atlanta Braves hope their star can return by next weekend

The Atlanta Braves aren’t having the most ideal season, mostly due to the vast amount of injuries across the team. But news got even worse on Saturday, and it unfortunately involves their star player.

On Saturday, the Braves announced that they’ve placed outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. on the 10-day injured list due to left wrist inflammation, retroactive Aug. 11. The team is hopeful that Acuña will be able to return at some point next weekend. In a corresponding move, the team has called up right-handed pitcher Chad Sobotka to fill Acuña’s roster spot.

Acuna has been out of the Braves lineup since Monday

Acuña left Atlanta’s game this past Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies, and was ruled out for the team’s two-game series against the New York Yankees. The Braves were initially hopeful that Acuña could avoid a stint on the injured list altogether, with a potential of him returning this upcoming Monday. The star outfielder didn’t make the trip to Miami this weekend, and after experiencing soreness on Saturday, Atlanta’s medical staff deemed that the extended period of rest would be best for him.

The young outfielder joins Atlanta’s star-studded injured list. Second baseman Ozzie Albies is dealing with wrist issues of his own, starting pitcher Mike Soroka is done for the season after tearing his Achilles tendon on Aug. 3 and free agent acquisition Cole Hamels is working his way back from triceps tendinitis.

This season, Acuña is slashing .258/.372/.515 while recording four home runs, nine RBI, 17 hits and 12 runs scored.

The Braves are just two games behind the underdog Marlins for first-place in the NL East division, as of this writing. Not having Acuña in the lineup will sting for the Braves, but all they can do is press onward and try to win some pivotal games this upcoming week to hopefully secure a spot in the MLB playoffs.
