Alex Rodriguez’s ownership group now favorites to purchase Mets
By John Buhler
Alex Rodriguez could have his own slice of New York if he buys the Mets
When we talked about Alex Rodriguez owning the New York Mets, we thought it’d be on the field.
It might sound crazy, but it ain’t no lie, as A-Rod and his partner Jennifer Lopez’s group are now the favorites to buy, buy, buy the Mets. Wait, are you serious, Buhler? A-Rod and J-Lo are gonna buy the Mets?
Well, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports, “Several MLB executives believe that the Alex Rodriguez ownership group, which has shown it has the money, is now the clear-cut favorite to purchase the Mets. There’s an Aug. 31 deadline to provide the best and final bids.”
Will Alex Rodriguez’s ownership group be what the New York Mets need?
Given the amount of capital needed to purchase a big league club like the Mets, Rodriguez’s group was seen as the third of three groups most likely to purchase the Mets. The two other bidding groups are Steve Cohen’s and Josh Harris’. Cohen was seen as the presumptive favorite to purchase the Mets, while Harris already owns two major professional sports franchises.
No, Rodriguez wouldn’t be the first big leaguer of his generation to have a stake in MLB ownership. In fact, his former New York Yankees teammate Derek Jeter has gone on to be an owner of the Miami Marlins in the years following his retirement. We’ve also seen Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes purchase a stake in the Kansas City Royals organization.
By the start of September, we will know who will be in control of the Mets franchise. This is a franchise that has long gotten in its own way. They are famous for The Bobby Bonilla Annuity and their former association with Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff.
While it could end up being as wonky as ownership is currently under the guidance of The Wilpons, there is reason to believe Rodriguez could be a catalyst for change with the Mets. They play in the biggest media market in the country and have never had a problem with attracting stars in free agency. The Mets might routinely make bad decisions, but that could be a thing of the past.
