DeAndre Hopkins has yet to take a single snap for the Arizona Cardinals, and because of this, speculation about his hamstring injury has already gotten out of control.

It’s not widespread or anything, but a Revenge of the Birds article, tweeted out by the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain, caught the attention of the new Cardinals wide receiver nonetheless.

In a tweet captioned “Is DeAndre Hopkins Holding Out?” from McClain, Hopkins quote-tweeted it with an update of his own from a reliable source: himself.

“No DeAndre Hopkins is not holding out,” he wrote. “From the source.”

In the sports industry, speculation can run wild, especially when it’s accompanied by the kinds of past biases that are not supposed to show up in journalism. It’s an unfortunate nature of the business, but it’s always good to see an athlete slam that type of nonsense when it surfaces.

Despite Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury saying he expected Hopkins to be back on the field soon, the article in question operated on a series of assumptions based on the reason he was most likely traded from the Houston Texans in such a stunning move: He wanted his contract situation addressed again.

The Cardinals have several options to consider as far as handing Hopkins a hefty new deal, especially in light of the five-year, $81 million contract extension he signed with the Texans back in 2017. Negotiations with his agent have already begun, but Hopkins will be looking for a nice payday as one of the NFL‘s top wide receivers.

Questioning whether he’s holding out until that situation is taken care of is only natural, but Hopkins addressed the matter himself. And as he pointed out, trusting good sources is the key to the most accurate reporting possible.
